Cooling Mattresses

The best cooling mattresses on Amazon

What Amazon actually carries in this category, ranked on the one specification that matters — and what it does not carry, said plainly.

Amazon's mattress catalog is not the same catalog the big review sites are ranking. The bed-in-a-box brands that dominate “best cooling mattress” results — Saatva, Helix, Nectar, Brooklyn Bedding, Nolah, Purple — sell their flagship models direct, and every competitor roundup we read links them direct rather than to Amazon.

What Amazon does carry is a deep catalog of value hybrids and all-foam beds from brands like Zinus, Novilla, Coolvie and EGOHOME, generally between $180 and $500. That is a genuinely useful market segment and it is badly served by review sites focused on the $1,500 tier. This page covers it properly.

How to read an Amazon mattress listing

Almost every listing in this category makes the same three claims — gel infused, cool-touch cover, and some combination of coils or foam. Only one of them changes how heat leaves the bed over eight hours.

  • Look for “pocketed coils” or “individually wrapped coils”. This is the specification that matters. If a listing does not mention coils, it is an all-foam bed.
  • Discount the additives. Gel, green tea, copper, charcoal and graphite are second-order effects that change how long the surface takes to warm, not where the heat goes.
  • Note what is missing.Coil count, coil gauge, foam density and latex type are the specs that would let you compare two hybrids, and essentially no listing publishes them. We mark those “Not published” rather than guessing.
  • Check for a fiberglass statement. Many budget foam mattresses use a fiberglass fire barrier under a cover you must never remove, and removing it causes a genuinely difficult contamination problem. A listing that says “fiberglass free” is telling you something checkable and worth having.
  • Read the height against your sheets. A 14-inch mattress needs deep pocket fitted sheets. Our sheets roundup flags which sets state a depth.

Expansion and the first few nights

Compressed mattresses need time to reach full height, typically 24 to 72 hours, and they off-gas a noticeable smell for the first day or two. Neither is a defect. What matters for our purposes is that you cannot judge temperature on night one: the bed is still expanding, the room is unfamiliar, and you have nothing to compare against yet. Give it a week before deciding, and check the return window before you need it.

#1Best overall

Novilla 12 Inch Hybrid Mattress, Individual Coils and Gel Memory Foam

Our pick of the Amazon-buyable cooling mattresses, for a structural reason rather than a marketing one: a pocket-coil core is mostly air, and air is the only thing in a mattress that moves heat.

What it gets right

  • Individually pocketed coils create an open core that convection can actually use
  • Coil layer also isolates movement better than a solid foam base
  • 12 inches with a comfort layer thin enough not to swallow you

Trade-offs

  • The gel memory foam comfort layer is still the part touching you
  • No coil count or coil gauge published — the specs that would let you compare hybrids
  • Heavier and harder to move than an all-foam bed

Why the construction matters. Coil count and gauge are the two specs that distinguish hybrids, and almost no Amazon listing publishes either. That absence is why we rank on construction type rather than pretending to compare models precisely.

Specifications read from the product listing on July 23, 2026. “Not published” means the listing does not state that figure.

#2Best for hot sleepers

Coolvie 14 Inch Hybrid, Euro Top with Cooling Latex

Coils underneath and latex rather than memory foam on top — the two construction choices that actually matter for heat, in one bed. The best-specified option here for a hot sleeper.

What it gets right

  • Latex comfort layer instead of viscoelastic foam: open cell structure, no heat-softened hollow
  • Pocket coil core underneath for airflow and support
  • Euro top construction keeps the latex layer inside the cover rather than as a loose slab

Trade-offs

  • Costs roughly twice the budget hybrids here
  • No latex type or density published — Dunlop and Talalay behave differently
  • 14 inches is tall enough that ordinary fitted sheets will not fit

Why the construction matters. Latex over coils is the classic cool-sleeping construction and predates the whole 'cooling mattress' category. It is expensive because latex is expensive, not because of anything proprietary.

Specifications read from the product listing on July 23, 2026. “Not published” means the listing does not state that figure.

#3Best mid-price hybrid

Novilla 12 Inch Hybrid with Pocketed Coils and Cool-Touch Cover

The same coil-core argument with a cold-touch cover added. The cover is a first-contact effect, not a night-long one — buy it for the coils and treat the cover as a bonus.

What it gets right

  • Pocketed coil core, the structure that actually helps
  • Cool-touch cover makes getting into bed more pleasant
  • Competitively priced against other Amazon hybrids

Trade-offs

  • Cold-touch covers equalize with your skin within minutes, like every conduction surface
  • No coil count or gauge published
  • Gel foam comfort layer above the coils still insulates

Why the construction matters. Every mattress in this category stacks the same three claims — gel, cool-touch cover, coils. Only the third one changes how heat leaves the bed over eight hours.

#4Best natural materials

Ethical Mattress CO 10 Inch Hybrid, Organic Cotton, Wool, Latex and Pocketed Coils

Natural materials all the way through, including a wool layer — which is the only common bedding fiber that buffers humidity as well as heat. The most expensive bed here and the one with the fewest synthetic compromises.

What it gets right

  • Wool absorbs a large share of its weight in moisture vapor before feeling damp — genuinely useful for night sweats
  • Latex and pocketed coils, no viscoelastic foam anywhere
  • Organic cotton cover, materials stated individually rather than as a blend

Trade-offs

  • Several times the price of the budget hybrids
  • No coil count, latex density or wool GSM published
  • Natural-fiber beds are heavy and hard to move

Why the construction matters. Wool is the underrated material in this whole category. It buffers moisture vapor and it is naturally flame-resistant, which is why natural mattresses can skip the chemical fire barrier that budget foam beds need.

Specifications read from the product listing on July 23, 2026. “Not published” means the listing does not state that figure.

#5Best budget all-foam

Zinus 10 Inch Green Tea Cooling Memory Foam Mattress, Fiberglass Free

The best-known all-foam bed on Amazon, and it states fiberglass-free — which matters, because fiberglass fire barriers are the reason 'never remove the cover' warnings exist. Still an all-foam bed, with all-foam heat behavior.

What it gets right

  • Explicitly states fiberglass free — a real, checkable safety spec most budget foam beds avoid mentioning
  • Long-established model with a stable specification
  • Ships compressed, which makes it manageable up a staircase

Trade-offs

  • All-foam beds have no coil layer, so there is no open space for air to move through the core
  • 'Green tea' and 'cooling' name additives, not a structure that moves heat
  • If sleeping hot is the problem, a hybrid is the better shape of answer

MaterialGel and green-tea infused memory foam
How it cools (our read)Less insulation

Why the construction matters. The single biggest thermal difference between mattresses is coils versus no coils. A pocket-coil layer is mostly empty space; a foam core is solid. Everything else in a mattress listing is second order.

Specifications read from the product listing on July 23, 2026. “Not published” means the listing does not state that figure.

#6Skip this

EGOHOME 10 Inch Memory Foam Mattress with Green Tea Gel

Skip this one

Skip this if heat is why you are shopping. It is a competent budget all-foam bed, and all-foam is the construction that sleeps hottest — the gel and the green tea do not change that.

What it gets right

  • Cheap, and genuinely comfortable for the money
  • Fine in a cool room or a guest bedroom

Trade-offs

  • Solid foam core with no open structure for air to move through
  • Gel infusion raises heat capacity briefly and then saturates
  • For roughly the same money you can buy a hybrid with a coil core

Why the construction matters. This is here as the direct comparison to our hybrid picks: near-identical price, opposite core construction. It is the cleanest illustration of why we rank on structure rather than on the word 'cooling'.

Common questions

Are the mattresses on Amazon any good?

The value segment is genuinely competent — $180 to $500 hybrids from brands like Zinus, Novilla and Coolvie. What Amazon does not carry is the flagship bed-in-a-box models from Saatva, Helix, Nectar and Purple, which those brands sell direct.

What should I look for in an Amazon mattress listing?

Pocketed or individually wrapped coils, which is the specification that decides how heat leaves the bed. Discount gel, green tea, copper and cool-touch claims as second-order. Look for a fiberglass-free statement, and check the mattress height against your fitted sheet's pocket depth.

Why do some cheap mattresses contain fiberglass?

It is used as a fire barrier under a cover the listing tells you never to remove. It works and it is legal; the problem is that removing the cover releases fibers that are extremely difficult to clean up. A listing that explicitly states fiberglass free is giving you a checkable specification.

How long does a boxed mattress take to expand?

Typically 24 to 72 hours to reach full height, with a noticeable off-gassing smell for the first day or two. Neither is a defect. It also means you cannot judge how a bed sleeps on night one — give it a week, and check the return window before you need it.

Try the cheap thing first

Work down this list in order. Each step costs more than the one above it, and most people stop before the bottom. Replacing a mattress to fix a problem your sheets were causing is the most expensive mistake in this category.

  1. 1Pillowcase, then pillowUnder $20 to start
  2. 2Sheets$25-$60
  3. 3Top layer$30-$90
  4. 4Topper or pad$30-$300
  5. 5The mattress$200-$900

Before any of it: work out which one is actually your problem. If your bedroom is 78°F, none of these will save you.
