Do cooling sheets actually work?
Sometimes. It depends entirely on which of three mechanisms the sheet is using, and only two of them survive past the first ten minutes.

Cooling sheets work when they use an open weave or an absorbent fiber, because both genuinely change how heat and sweat leave your skin. They do not work when the claim rests on a cold-touch coating: that feels cool for a few minutes and then matches your skin temperature. No sheet can lower the temperature of your room.
“Cooling” is not a regulated term in bedding, so it covers three physically different things. Two of them work. One of them is real for about the length of time it takes to fall asleep, which is why it sells so well and why people come away thinking the whole category is nonsense.
Mechanism 1: airflow. Works all night.
An open weave lets warm, humid air move away from your skin by convection. Percale, linen and waffle all work this way. This mechanism does not saturate, does not wear off, and does not depend on a coating surviving the wash. It is the most reliable thing you can buy, and it is why our top picks are almost all open weaves.
The limit: convection only carries heat away if the surrounding air is cooler than you are. In a hot room there is nowhere for the heat to go.
Mechanism 2: moisture transport. Works all night, in a dry room.
Evaporating sweat is by far the most powerful cooling process available to a human body — evaporating one gram of water absorbs roughly 2,400 joules, far more heat than any fabric can conduct away. A fabric that moves sweat off your skin and spreads it out to evaporate is doing real work. Lyocell, viscose and engineered wicking polyesters all do this.
The limit: evaporation needs somewhere for the vapor to go. In a humid room the air is already close to saturated and this mechanism weakens sharply. That is why the same sheet can feel transformative in Denver and useless in Houston.
Mechanism 3: cold-touch conduction. Works for minutes.
This is the “Q-Max” family — slick nylon or specially finished fabrics that feel cold the instant you touch them. The sensation is real and it is measurable: Q-Max is a genuine instrument reading of peak heat flux during the first moments of contact. Higher numbers mean a colder first touch.
Here is the part the marketing skips. Conduction moves heat from a warmer object to a cooler one, and it stops when they reach the same temperature. A passive fabric has nowhere to put the heat it absorbs. Once the sheet has warmed to your skin temperature — a matter of minutes — no further heat flows into it. A listing that says a blanket “absorbs heat to keep you cool all night” is describing something a passive fabric cannot do.
This does not make cold-touch products useless. Falling asleep is genuinely easier on a cool surface, and a well-designed one gives you a second side to flip to. It makes them a sleep-onset aid rather than a night-long solution, and pricing them as the latter is the category's central dishonesty.

The honest summary
A good sheet is worth buying and it is the cheapest useful change you can make. It is also a change of a few degrees at the skin, not a climate-control system. If you have bought percale, you have washed it, you have two sets, and you are still waking up at 3am drenched, the sheet is no longer the problem — work up the ladder to the mattress surface, or look at the powered options, which are the only products on this site that remove heat rather than slowing it down.
