Cooling Mattress Toppers

The best cooling mattress pads for hot sleepers

The most under-bought product in this category. A pad changes the surface you lie on without adding a slab of anything.

A mattress pad is a thin quilted layer that sits under your fitted sheet. It adds a small amount of softness, changes the surface you are in contact with, and — crucially for anyone who sweats — goes in the washing machine. For a hot sleeper it is usually a better purchase than a topper, and it costs a fraction as much.

The logic is simple and it runs against the way the category is sold. Every layer you add to a bed is insulation. A three-inch foam topper is a lot of insulation; a half-inch fiber pad is very little. If your problem is that the mattress surface feels hot rather than that the mattress is too firm, the pad does the job the topper was going to do without the thermal cost. That distinction is set out in full on topper vs pad vs protector.

What to look for

  • Fiber fill, not foam.Fiber leaves air gaps; foam does not. If a “pad” listing mentions memory foam, it is a thin topper.
  • An absorbent surface fabric. A viscose or cotton face moves sweat; a plain polyester face holds it against you.
  • A deep stretch skirt.Same problem as sheets — a pad that pops off a tall mattress is worse than no pad.
  • Machine washable at a real temperature. The washability is a genuine thermal feature, not a convenience one.
  • Waterproof only if you need it. Any membrane restricts vapor transfer. Buy it for a reason.

How we picked

Ranked on construction rather than on the word “cooling”, with the mechanism stated for every pick so you can see which physical effect you are buying. Prices are pulled live at render rather than typed in. Full method: how we pick.

#1Best overall

Niagara Sleep Solution Ultra Soft Bamboo-Viscose Pillow-Top Mattress Pad

The right first move for most hot sleepers, because it changes the surface without adding a slab of foam. A pad this thin cannot insulate you the way a topper does.

What it gets right

  • Fiber fill, not memory foam — it does not mold around you and hold heat in the hollow
  • Viscose surface moves moisture better than the polyester quilting on most pads
  • Cheap enough to be a genuine experiment rather than a commitment

Trade-offs

  • Adds very little pressure relief — if your hips hurt, this is not the fix
  • Fiber fill compresses over time and needs replacing sooner than foam
  • No fill weight published
Published specifications
MaterialViscose derived from bamboo, fiber fill
How it cools (our read)Less insulation
Certifications statedNone stated

Why the construction matters. The whole argument for a pad over a topper: a topper puts two or three inches of foam between you and the mattress. A pad puts a fraction of an inch of fiber there. Less material between you and the room is less insulation.

Specifications read from the product listing on July 23, 2026. “Not published” means the listing does not state that figure.

#2Best cold-touch surface

Elegear Arc-Chill 3.0 + PCM Cooling Mattress Pad

The most interesting mechanism here and the one with the clearest limit: phase-change material absorbs heat until it saturates, then stops. Excellent for falling asleep, not a solution for 4am.

What it gets right

  • Phase-change material genuinely absorbs heat — it is a real physical process, not a surface feel
  • The cold-touch surface makes getting into bed noticeably easier on a warm night
  • Far cheaper than any powered cooling system

Trade-offs

  • A PCM layer has a finite heat capacity; once it has absorbed its load it behaves like ordinary fabric until it re-solidifies
  • 'Q-Max' cold-touch numbers describe the first few seconds of contact, not the night
  • Listing publishes no PCM mass, which is the number that would tell you how long it lasts
Published specifications
MaterialNylon cold-touch face with phase-change layer
How it cools (our read)Phase-change material
Certifications statedNone stated

Why the construction matters. Phase-change materials store energy by melting at a set temperature. The useful capacity is the mass of PCM times its latent heat — so without a published PCM mass, nobody can tell you how many hours it buys.

Specifications read from the product listing on July 23, 2026. “Not published” means the listing does not state that figure.

#3Best if you want cushioning

BEDLORE Viscose-from-Bamboo Thick Pillow-Top Mattress Pad

A thicker fiber pad for people who want the softness of a topper without the foam. It insulates more than a thin pad — that is the trade you are making, and it is worth making knowingly.

What it gets right

  • Noticeably more cushion than a thin quilted pad
  • Fiber fill still breathes far better than an equivalent depth of memory foam
  • Stretch skirt fits deep mattresses

Trade-offs

  • More fill means more insulation — this is a compromise, not a cooling upgrade over a thin pad
  • Fiber fill flattens in the areas you use most
  • No fill weight published
Published specifications
MaterialViscose derived from bamboo, fiber fill
How it cools (our read)Less insulation
Certifications statedNone stated

Why the construction matters. Every increment of loft you add to a bed is an increment of insulation. A thick pad is a real comfort upgrade and a small thermal cost — worth it for some people, and worth stating plainly.

Specifications read from the product listing on July 23, 2026. “Not published” means the listing does not state that figure.

#4Best waterproof option

Utopia Bedding 200 GSM Bamboo-Viscose Waterproof Mattress Protector

The one protector we would put on a hot sleeper's bed, and the only one here that publishes a fabric weight. Waterproof always costs you some breathability — this loses the least.

What it gets right

  • Publishes 200 GSM, which almost nothing in this category does
  • Viscose face moves moisture better than a plain polyester protector
  • Thin membrane rather than a laminated vinyl sheet

Trade-offs

  • Any waterproof membrane blocks vapor to some degree — physics, not a product flaw
  • If you do not need waterproofing, a protector is a layer of insulation you added for nothing
  • Membrane materials degrade with hot washing
Published specifications
MaterialBamboo viscose face, waterproof membrane backing
How it cools (our read)Moisture wicking
Fabric weight (GSM)200
Certifications statedNone stated

Why the construction matters. A published GSM is a small thing that tells you a lot: this seller measured its own fabric. Most competitors in this category publish nothing you can check.

Specifications read from the product listing on July 23, 2026. “Not published” means the listing does not state that figure.

#5Best budget pad

MATBEBY Quilted Fitted Mattress Pad and Protector

A cheap quilted pad that adds a thin comfort layer and takes the wash instead of your mattress. Modest on cooling, useful on laundry.

What it gets right

  • Thin enough not to insulate meaningfully
  • Machine washable, which matters if you sweat
  • Very cheap

Trade-offs

  • The cooling claim is generic — no named fiber technology behind it
  • Thin fill offers little cushioning
  • No fill weight or fabric weight published
Published specifications
MaterialPolyester fill, polyester face
How it cools (our read)Less insulation
Certifications statedNone stated

Why the construction matters. Being washable is an underrated thermal feature. Sweat-loaded fabric holds moisture against you; a layer you can strip and wash weekly stays closer to its original behavior.

Specifications read from the product listing on July 23, 2026. “Not published” means the listing does not state that figure.

#6Thinnest option

SLEEP ZONE Zoned Cool Mattress Pad Cover

A thin zoned pad at a low price. It will not change your night much, but it will not insulate you either — which for some beds is exactly the right amount of intervention.

What it gets right

  • Thin, so it adds almost no insulation
  • Zoned quilting keeps the fill from migrating into lumps
  • Inexpensive and washable

Trade-offs

  • Very little cushioning
  • No named cooling technology — the claim is generic
  • No fabric weight published
Published specifications
MaterialPolyester face and fill
How it cools (our read)Less insulation
Certifications statedNone stated

Why the construction matters. Zoned quilting is a durability feature rather than a thermal one — it stops fill migration. Worth knowing so you do not pay for it expecting cooling.

Specifications read from the product listing on July 23, 2026. “Not published” means the listing does not state that figure.

Common questions

Are cooling mattress pads worth it?

For a hot sleeper, usually more so than a topper. A pad is thin, so it changes the surface you lie on without adding meaningful insulation, and it is washable, which matters if you sweat. It will not fix a mattress that is too firm, because that is not what a pad does.

Do mattress pads make you hotter?

A thin fiber one barely registers, which is the point. Thick quilted pads and anything with a foam layer add real insulation. Waterproof pads add a vapor barrier as well, so only buy that feature if you actually need it.

What is the difference between a cooling mattress pad and a protector?

A pad adds a thin layer of fill for slight softness and a different surface feel. A protector is a barrier, usually waterproof, and adds no comfort at all. Some products do both jobs, and doing both means accepting the protector's vapor resistance.

Can I put a cooling pad over a memory foam mattress?

Yes, and it is one of the better ways to improve a foam bed without replacing it. A fiber pad puts a breathable layer between you and the foam, so you are no longer in direct contact with the surface that softens and wraps around you.

Try the cheap thing first

Work down this list in order. Each step costs more than the one above it, and most people stop before the bottom. Replacing a mattress to fix a problem your sheets were causing is the most expensive mistake in this category.

  1. 1Pillowcase, then pillowUnder $20 to start
  2. 2Sheets$25-$60
  3. 3Top layer$30-$90
  4. 4Topper or pad$30-$300
  5. 5The mattress$200-$900

Before any of it: work out which one is actually your problem. If your bedroom is 78°F, none of these will save you.
