Gel foam vs PCM: two different kinds of cooling
These get sold as the same idea and they are not. Gel foam manages heat slowly over the whole night; a phase-change panel dumps cool at the start and then gives up.

A PCM or cold-touch pad cools fast — it feels genuinely cold when you get in — but it saturates within roughly an hour and then does nothing. Gel-infused foam is the opposite: modest and slow, a small effect that lasts longer. Neither refrigerates you, so if you wake hot in the middle of the night, neither is the fix. For that you need airflow, latex, or a powered bed cooling system.
These two get sold under the same word — “cooling” — and they are not the same thing. One manages a little heat across the whole night; the other dumps a burst of cool at the start and gives up. Knowing which problem you actually have decides which one, if either, is worth buying.
Gel-infused foam: slow and small
A gel-infused topper or pad is memory foam with gel beads or a gel layer mixed in. The gel raises the foam's heat capacity— its ability to soak up warmth before its own temperature climbs — so the surface is slower to warm to your body than plain foam would be. That is a real effect, and it is a small one. The gel is a fixed quantity: once it has warmed to your temperature it stops contributing, and underneath it is still foam, which softens, wraps you, and insulates. Gel foam spreads heat out over time; it does not make it go away.
PCM: fast, cold, and finite
A phase-change material is a genuinely different mechanism. It is engineered to change state — typically to soften or melt — at a set temperature near your skin, and while it does so it absorbs a large slug of latent heatwithout getting warmer itself. That is why a PCM pad feels properly cold to the touch, not just cool: it is pulling heat out of you fast. But latent heat is a finite tank. Once the material has fully changed state it is saturated, and it behaves like ordinary fabric until it re-solidifies later. No listing publishes how much PCM is inside, which is the only number that would tell you whether it buys twenty minutes or ninety — the reasoning is on whether cooling toppers work.

Which problem do you have?
Be honest about when you overheat, because that is the whole decision.
- You get into bed hot and struggle to drop off, then you are fine. This is a sleep-onset flush, and a PCM pad is built for exactly it — the fast, cold hit gets you across the line into sleep, and it does not matter that it fades an hour later because by then you are out.
- You sleep fine at first and cook steadily through the night.This is all-night heat, and neither product truly solves it. Gel foam's small, slow effect is closer to the right shape than PCM's early burst, but “closer” is not “solved.”
- You wake up drenched at 3am. That is a job for neither. You need airflow or active cooling, not a passive panel with a fixed tank of cool in it.
Give either one the best chance
Whatever you put on top can only shed heat into the layers around it, so pair it with a breathable base rather than a sealed one. A ventilated or latex surface under the pad, an open percale or linen sheet over it, and a room that is not already warm all give the cool somewhere to go. Sit a PCM pad on a heat-trapping memory-foam mattress and you shorten the little runway it has.
