Almost every other page here warns you that foam sleeps hot. Latex is the exception, and it is the only foam we recommend to a hot sleeper without a caveat about heat. It is worth understanding why before you pay the premium it commands, because the reason is structural rather than a marketing claim you have to take on faith.
Why latex is the one foam that breathes
Two things are built into a latex slab at the factory, and both happen to move air. First, latex is open-celled: it is whipped into a froth and cured, so the finished foam is a web of interconnected air pockets rather than a sealed block. Second, it is pin-cored— molded around a grid of pins that leaves cylindrical holes running through the slab. Those holes exist so heat can reach the core during curing, but they also give air a route straight through the topper once it is on your bed.
Memory foam has neither feature. It is a solid viscoelastic block that softens as it warms, so it wraps more of you as the night goes on and traps your body heat in the hollow it forms. The feel: it holds you up, it does not swallow you
Latex is elasticrather than viscoelastic. Press it and it pushes straight back; move and it returns to shape instantly. You rest on top of it rather than sinking into it, which is what keeps an air gap alive under you and what makes it buoyant and supportive at the same time. That combination suits both back sleepers, who need the spine held level, and side sleepers, who need the hip and shoulder to sink without the rest of the body following. Dunlop vs Talalay, natural vs synthetic
Two processes make latex, and they feel different. Dunlop is poured and cured under gravity, which settles the material into a denser, firmer, more supportive slab. Talalay is vacuum-expanded and flash-frozen, which leaves a lighter, airier, springier structure that generally sleeps a touch cooler. Neither is wrong: Dunlop is the value-and-support choice, Talalay the plusher, cooler, pricier one.
Separately, watch whether a topper is natural or synthetic. Natural latex is tapped from rubber trees and is the most resilient and breathable version — it is also what carries the GOLS organic certification you will see on the better listings. How to read the picks
Our best overall is a medium-firm natural latex slab: premium, heavy, and the closest thing to a buy-once topper in the whole category, because latex outlasts foam by years rather than months. The gel buys a cooler first contact and then saturates, and underneath it is still memory foam that wraps and insulates — so it sleeps warmer than any latex topper here. Who should not bother
Latex earns its price only if you genuinely need pressure relief. If your mattress is comfortable and merely the surface runs warm, a latex slab is overkill — you are buying two or three inches of contour you did not ask for. A thin fiber pad changes the surface for a fraction of the money and even less insulation. Buy latex for the give; if you only want the cool, spend less.

Two, and neither is a dealbreaker.
