Cooling Mattresses

Cooling mattress vs cooling topper

One of these costs $50 and one costs $500. There is a simple test that tells you which problem you actually have.

A mattress with a folded topper resting on it

Buy a topper if the mattress supports you properly and only the surface feels hot or firm — that is a surface problem and a topper fixes it for a tenth of the price. Buy a mattress if it sags, if you wake with back pain, or if it is more than about eight years old, because those are structural failures a topper cannot fix.

The test

Lie on your back on the bed and slide a hand into the gap under your lower back.

If your hand slides in easily and there is a clear gap, the mattress is not supporting your spine. That is a structural problem — the core has failed or was never right — and a topper laid over it will follow the same shape. You need a mattress.

If your hand is snug and your spine feels supported, the structure is fine and whatever is bothering you is happening at the surface: it feels too firm, or it feels hot. Both are topper-shaped problems, and a topper costs between a fifth and a tenth of a mattress.

Do the same check lying on your side, looking for whether your hips sink markedly more than your shoulders. That points to a soft spot rather than a surface issue.

The arithmetic

Using the live prices on our topper roundup and mattress picks, plus typical manufacturer service lives:

Rough cost per year. Prices are live figures at the time of writing; service lives are typical ranges, not measured.
PurchasePrice bandTypical lifeCost per year
Fiber pad$25-$702-3 yearsAbout $10-$30
Gel foam topper$40-$903-5 yearsAbout $10-$25
Latex topper$220-$33010+ yearsAbout $22-$33
Budget hybrid mattress$200-$2507-10 yearsAbout $22-$35
Latex hybrid mattress$430-$50010+ yearsAbout $43-$50

Two things fall out of that. A latex topper costs roughly the same per year as a budget hybrid mattress — so if your mattress structure is sound, the topper is genuinely the better value rather than merely the cheaper option. And a cheap foam topper is the most expensive thing on the list per year of use, because you will replace it three times in the life of anything else here.

The stopgap case

There is a legitimate middle path: your all-foam mattress is the cause, you know it, and you are not ready to spend $400. A latex topper over an all-foam bed genuinely helps, because it changes the surface you contact from a heat-softened viscoelastic layer to an open-celled elastic one. It does not fix the solid core underneath, and it buys you a year or two.

What does not work is putting a gel memory foam topper over a memory foam mattress to fix heat. That is adding more of the cause, and it is one of the most common mistakes we see described in this category.

Before either: the cheap stuff

Both of these are the bottom of the ladder. Sheets, top layer and pillow together cost under $100 and fix the problem for most people. If you have not done those, do them first — you may discover the mattress was never the issue.

Common questions

Should I buy a cooling mattress or a cooling topper?

A topper, if the mattress still supports your spine properly and the issue is only how the surface feels. A mattress, if the bed sags, you wake with back pain, or it is more than about eight years old — those are structural failures that a topper laid on top will simply follow.

How do I know if my mattress is the problem?

Lie on your back and slide a hand into the gap under your lower back. If it slides in easily and there is a clear gap, the mattress is not supporting you and that is structural. If it is snug, the structure is fine and whatever bothers you is at the surface, which a topper can fix.

Can a topper fix a memory foam mattress that sleeps hot?

Partly. A latex topper changes the surface you contact from a heat-softened viscoelastic layer to an open-celled elastic one, which genuinely helps, and it does not change the solid foam core underneath. What does not work is adding a gel memory foam topper, which is more of the same cause.

Is a topper cheaper than a mattress over time?

It depends which topper. A latex topper lasts ten years or more and works out at roughly the same cost per year as a budget hybrid mattress, so it is genuinely better value if your mattress structure is sound. A cheap foam topper is the worst value on a per-year basis because you replace it three times over.

Try the cheap thing first

Work down this list in order. Each step costs more than the one above it, and most people stop before the bottom. Replacing a mattress to fix a problem your sheets were causing is the most expensive mistake in this category.

  1. 1Pillowcase, then pillowUnder $20 to start
  2. 2Sheets$25-$60
  3. 3Top layer$30-$90
  4. 4Topper or pad$30-$300
  5. 5The mattress$200-$900

Before any of it: work out which one is actually your problem. If your bedroom is 78°F, none of these will save you.
