Buy the body pillow you can make smaller. A body pillow earns its place by filling the gaps a side sleeper leaves — under the arm, between the knees — and every inch of fill past that is insulation lying along your torso. So the right pick has loose fill in a chamber you can open, in the smallest size that still closes your gap, under a cover that absorbs sweat rather than one that feels cold for a minute. Total mass is the variable here. Gel, cold-touch knits and the word cooling are not.
A body pillow is the largest object most people voluntarily press against their skin all night, and almost nothing written about the category mentions temperature. The standard size is 20 inches by 54 inches. Lie on your side and hug one and you have laid a strip of bedding from your collarbone to your ankles and pinned it there with your own arm and knee, in continuous contact, for eight hours.
That is a genuinely different thermal object from a head pillow, and it is worth being clear about why before you spend anything. A head pillow touches one cheek. A body pillow touches your chest, your stomach, the inside of your upper arm and the inside of your thigh — surfaces that would otherwise be open to the room, and that end up pressed against fabric rather than air once the pillow is between them. You have not simply added a pillow to the bed. You have covered a large amount of the skin you were cooling through.
None of which makes a body pillow a bad idea. Side sleepers who use one generally sleep better with it than without, and the alignment reason is real: it stops the top leg dragging the hip forward and it gives the upper arm somewhere to be. It does mean the buying decision is not the one the listings set up for you. Almost every product in this category leads on its cover fabric — cool-touch, ice silk, hexagonal knit — because a cover is cheap to change and photographs well. The cover is the third most important thing about a body pillow. What is inside it, and how much of it there is, are the first two.
What a body pillow actually does to your temperature
Three effects, in descending order of size.
Contact area is the big one.A bed sheds your heat two ways: air moving across exposed skin, and sweat evaporating off it. Both need skin that is open to the room. A body pillow roughly doubles the amount of bedding in contact with you, and it does it on the parts of you that were doing the most useful work — the inner arm and inner thigh are exposed surfaces on a side sleeper right up until the moment something is put between them. This is geometry, not chemistry, which is why no cover fabric fixes it.
Mass is the second. Fill weight in a body pillow does not sit beside you the way a mattress does; it sits on you, held in place by your own limbs. A five-pound insert is five pounds of insulating material pressed against your chest all night. This is the single clearest reason the weighted version is our skip: eight pounds of glass beads is a large thermal mass, and no amount of lyocell over the top of it changes that.
Trapped air is the third. The pocket of air between the pillow and your body warms to your temperature within minutes and then has nowhere to go. A loose fill gives it somewhere: when you shift, air moves through the gaps between the pieces and gets exchanged. A solid slab of foam or a dense batting makes that pocket a sealed space. What we required before a body pillow could appear here
The entry test is narrow on purpose, because the listings in this category are unusually uninformative even by bedding standards. Every pick below had to clear all four of these.
- It states what the fill is.Not the cover — the fill. A surprising number of body pillow listings describe the knit on the outside in three sentences and the thing inside in none. If we could not tell whether we were looking at shredded foam, latex or polyester batting, it did not go on the page.
- The fill is loose, or the pillow is small. Those are the only two ways to reduce the heat penalty. Loose fill means air can move through it and you can take some out; a smaller pillow means there is less of it against you in the first place. A full-length slab of solid batting is neither, and there is no version of that we would recommend to a hot sleeper.
- The cover comes off and washes. A body pillow catches torso sweat, which is a larger volume than a head pillow deals with, and a pillow you cannot launder becomes the least hygienic thing in the bed within a season. Every insert below has a removable cover.
- It is currently purchasable. Every product below was resolved from a live Amazon listing on the date stamped in its write-up, and the prices you see are pulled from Amazon rather than typed in by us. Our full method, including what we have and have not done with these products, is on how we pick.
What we did not require was the word cooling. It appears in the marketing of five of the six products below and it predicts nothing at all — the one that never uses it has the widest fill-removal range on the page.
The three things that decide how hot a body pillow sleeps
Rank body pillows on these, in this order, and the category stops being confusing.
One: loose fill or a slab.Shredded foam, shredded latex and hulls are collections of pieces with interconnected gaps between them, and those gaps are air channels that get pumped and exchanged every time you move. A solid core or a sewn batting has no route through it. The material can be identical — shredded memory foam and a solid memory foam block are the same polyurethane — and the night is completely different. Perforated latex is the honorable exception: it is one piece, but the holes go all the way through.
Two: how much of it there is. Two numbers matter and the listings publish them inconsistently: the dimensions and the weight. A 20 x 54 inch pillow is a lot of material; a 38 x 7.5 inch bolster is a fraction of it and does most of the same alignment job if what you need is knee separation rather than something to hug. Published weights, where a listing gives one at all, run from about three pounds to eight across the products below. That is close to a three-fold difference in the amount of material you end up holding, inside one category, at broadly similar prices.
Three: what the cover fiber is. Once the structure is right, the cover is the layer actually against your skin and it should absorb. Viscose, lyocell and cotton take sweat into the fiber and move it sideways to evaporate. A cool-touch polyester or nylon knit does the opposite: it feels cold for the first minute because it conducts heat quickly, then it reaches your skin temperature and leaves the moisture exactly where it landed. Not on that list: gel, any Q-Max number, the word breathable, and price. None of the four predicts how a body pillow sleeps.
How to read the picks
Our best overall is the only product here that gets both halves right at once. The fill is shredded natural latex rather than a solid core, so it has gaps and you can remove some; the cover is stated as OEKO-TEX certified lyocell, which is the one fiber on this page that absorbs. It is also the only pick divided into three separately zippered chambers, and that matters more on a body pillow than it sounds: a five-foot pillow is long enough that the section under your arm and the section under your knees want different amounts of fill, and a single-chamber pillow makes you choose. Its honest limitations are the price, which is the highest here, and the fill, which is latex blended with a high-elasticity fiber at a ratio the listing never states. That is the same blend silence we hold against lyocell sheet sets, and it is worth knowing you are not buying pure latex.
The best budget buyis the same structural idea for about a third of the money. Shredded fill, a zippered port you can pull foam out of, a washable cover. It is chopped memory foam blended with hollow fiber — again with no ratio published — and at a listed 5.72 pounds it is the heaviest insert on this page, which is a real cost given that mass is the second variable. Buy it if you are not yet sure a body pillow is for you. It gets the decision that matters right and spends nothing on the decisions that do not, and if you conclude the whole idea is not for you, you are out thirty dollars rather than eighty.
The most adjustable pick is the one that never says cooling anywhere. It is a plain shredded memory foam insert with a cover that unzips and fill that comes out by the handful, and it has the widest adjustment range here. It also names two certifications you can look up, which almost nothing in this category does. We rank it third rather than first for one reason: it is memory foam, and memory foam softens and warms as you lie against it, so removing fill is mitigation rather than a fix. If you want the largest amount of control over how much pillow you are actually holding, this is the one, and you should plan on taking a good deal of fill out on the first night.
The least materialpick is the smallest thing on this page and, for a hot sleeper specifically, the most interesting. It is a perforated latex bolster: one piece, but drilled through, so the airflow path is structural and cannot wash out or wear off, and at a published 38 by 7.5 inches it is a fraction of the contact area of a full-length pillow. If what you actually need is knee separation — and for a lot of side sleepers that is the whole job — this does it without laying a second mattress-width of insulation down your front. The trade is that its listing publishes four lines and nothing else: no fill weight, no cover fiber, no Talalay-or-Dunlop, and an “organic cover” claim with no certification attached to it. It is also not adjustable, and latex is dense.
The cheapest fix is not a pillow at all. If you already own a body pillow you otherwise like, the fastest improvement available is to change the only layer touching you, and a viscose case costs less than fifteen dollars. This one states a twill weave and an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which is two published facts more than most body pillow covers offer. Be clear about what it can and cannot do: a case changes the surface, not the structure, so it will not rescue an over-stuffed insert or a solid batting slab. It is the same move we recommend first on the cooling pillowcase page, for the same reason, and it is the right first experiment because it is cheap and completely reversible.
The skipis a weighted body pillow with a cooling cover, and it is the clearest example on the site of two products fighting inside one object. Eight pounds of glass-bead fill held against your chest is the largest thermal mass in this roundup by a wide margin, and the cooling claim rests on a single thin layer of Tencel sitting over the top of it. The weight is genuinely what some people want from a body pillow and we are not pretending otherwise — the listing states it plainly, which is more than many do. It is simply the wrong product to buy for heat, and its contoured shape means there is no fill to remove and no way to make it smaller. Three of the six will not name the fiber in the cover they are selling you on. One describes it with a trademark instead — a brand name is not a fiber content — and one calls it organic without saying organic what. Exactly one of the six publishes a fill weight, and it is the product we are telling you not to buy. This is the state of the category rather than a gap in our research, and it is the reason the picks above are ordered by structure rather than by specification: structure is the thing you can still verify from a listing that has decided to tell you almost nothing.
Two things worth trying before you buy anything
Use a small pillow between the knees instead.Most of the alignment work a body pillow does for a side sleeper happens below the waist: stopping the top leg from dragging the hip and pelvis forward. A spare pillow you already own, placed between the knees, does that for nothing, and its contact area is a small fraction of a full-length pillow’s. If you try that for a week and the only thing still missing is somewhere to put your top arm, you have learned something useful about which size to buy.
Move the one you have further out. The common way people use a body pillow is to hug it flat against the chest and stomach, which is the hottest possible arrangement. Pushing it out so that it supports the upper arm and the top knee without lying along your torso keeps most of the alignment benefit and gives your chest back to the room. It costs nothing and it is reversible in one night, which puts it in the same category as the other free fixes on what to fix first.
One scope note, since a majority of listings in this category market themselves this way: several of these products are sold primarily as pregnancy pillows. Pregnancy is outside what this site covers, and nothing here is guidance about it — the picks are ranked on how much heat they add to a bed and on nothing else.
Where a body pillow sits among your other options
A body pillow is a side sleeper’s tool, and side sleepers have a harder cooling problem than anyone else in the bed because every fix their alignment needs adds material. It is the same tension we describe on cooling pillows for side sleepers and on cooling toppers for side sleepers: you need more loft and more contour than a back sleeper does, and both of those are insulation. The resolution is the same in all three cases, which is that the answer is not less material but differently structured material.
If you are working through the bed in order of cost, a body pillow is not step one. The case on your head pillow, then your sheets, then the surface of the mattress are all cheaper interventions with larger effects for most people, and the ladder is set out on what to fix first.
