If you take one thing from this site, take this: change your pillowcase before you change anything else. Your head and neck have high surface blood flow, they are in continuous contact with one small piece of fabric for eight hours, and unlike the rest of you they are usually not under a blanket. It is the highest heat flux per square inch in the bed and the cheapest thing on it.
Two mechanisms, and only one lasts the night
Absorbent cases— viscose, lyocell, cotton — pull sweat off your skin into the fiber. Undramatic when you lie down, and it works until the fabric is saturated, which for most people is most of the night. This is what we recommend as a default.
Cold-touch cases— Q-Max, “ice silk”, arc-chill — feel genuinely cold the moment you touch them. Q-Max is a real instrument reading of heat flux during the first seconds of contact. Conduction then stops when the fabric reaches your skin temperature, which takes minutes, because a passive fabric has nowhere to put the heat. Useful for falling asleep; irrelevant by 2am.
The best cold-touch products concede this in their own design by giving you an ordinary reverse side to flip to. That flip is the honest answer to conduction's ceiling, and a dual-sided case is the only kind of cold-touch product we would recommend.
The satin trap
Satin pillowcases are marketed as cooling constantly and they are not a cooling product. Satin is a weave and silk is a fiber— a marketplace satin pillowcase is nearly always polyester in a satin weave, and it behaves like polyester, which does not absorb sweat at all. It genuinely reduces friction on hair, which is a real benefit for a different problem. We have included one below labeled for exactly what it is.
Buy several
A pillowcase is cheap enough that owning four and changing them twice a week is realistic, and a clean dry case behaves far more like the fabric you bought than a case three nights into a hot week. For a heavy sweater this does more than upgrading from a good case to a slightly better one. Skip fabric softener, which deposits a hydrophobic coating and directly undoes the absorbency you paid for.
