Silk sheets are not hot, but they are not the coolest choice either. Silk is a moderately absorbent protein fiber with a cool first touch, yet silk sheets are usually charmeuse, a dense satin weave with little airflow, and they need delicate care. For pure cooling, percale and linen win. For a silky feel that handles sweat, choose lyocell.
If you sleep hot, silk looks like the obvious upgrade. It feels cool when you first lie on it, and silk sellers say it keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. The honest answer is more mixed than either the marketing or the skeptics suggest. Silk is a better fiber for a hot sleeper than its reputation for luxury implies, and silk sheets are a worse one, for reasons that have more to do with how they are woven and washed than with the fiber itself.
We should say up front that we do not rank a silk sheet set. There is none in the catalog we recommend from, and this page explains why: on cooling alone, per dollar and per wash, other fabrics do the job better. What follows is the reasoning, and the fabrics we would put on the bed instead.
What silk actually is
Silk is a protein. The Council of Fashion Designers of America describes it as a natural protein fiber produced by the larvae of a moth, and as the only natural filament fiber. That filament is the key difference from cotton and linen, which are spun from plant fibers twisted into yarn. Long, smooth, continuous threads make a smooth, lustrous cloth that drapes and lies flat, which is exactly what people love about it and, as you will see, part of what makes it a middling choice for heat.
Does silk absorb sweat?
Yes, and this is where silk deserves more credit than it gets. Textile scientists measure a fiber’s appetite for water as its moisture regain: how much water it holds from ordinary air, measured against its dry weight. A 2011 paper on silk fibers in the Journal of Entomology cites a regain of about 11 percent for silk at 65 percent relative humidity, which it describes as larger than many other commercial fibers and more in line with wool; its own sample of cultivated mulberry silk measured 8.53 percent. Polyester, by contrast, barely absorbs at all, which is the whole problem with it in a bed. Silk is not a sweaty synthetic.
The catch is speed. A study in the Journal of Sericultural Science of Japan compared how fabrics of different fibers absorbed moisture from the air under the same conditions, and its measure of uptake ranked them cotton, then linen, then silk, then wool. Silk holds a fair amount of water, but it takes it up more slowly than the two plant fibers that hot sleepers are usually told to buy. Moderate is the fair word for how it handles a sweating body, and it is the word our sheet materials guide uses. The difference between absorbing sweat and merely moving it is on what wicking really means.
The weave is where silk sheets lose
Fiber decides how a sheet handles sweat. Weave decides how much air gets through, and that is the part of the silk story that rarely makes the headline. The silk in sheets and pillowcases is usually charmeuse. Mulberry Park Silks, which makes silk bedding, calls it “the luxurious fabric you know from high-end pillowcases and sheets”, and defines it as silk in a satin weave, in which the warp threads float over several weft threads, often four over and one under, to give a glossy face and a matte back.
That is the same float geometry as cotton sateen, and it has the same consequence. Long floats let the yarns settle tightly against each other, so the cloth has less open area than a plain one-over-one-under weave, and open area is what lets heat and air move through a sheet. Silk sellers also quote a weight in momme, which Mulberry Park describes as a measure of the silk’s weight and the density of the weave. Its own bedding runs from 19 to 30 momme, and it puts even the lightest of those at roughly the equivalent of 600 thread count in cotton. That is the dense end of the scale set out in our thread count guide, where tighter packing means less air moving through the cloth, and a higher momme means more silk and a denser cloth still.
Why silk feels cool, and why that fades
The cool first touch is real. A smooth, dense face lies in close contact with your skin, so heat leaves you quickly for the first moments. But that is contact, not cooling: it stops once the fabric reaches skin temperature, which is the same effect behind most cold-touch claims and is explained on do cooling sheets work. The silk sellers’ own claim points the same way. Mulberry Park says its charmeuse keeps you cool in summer by wicking away moisture and warm in winter by “creating pockets of insulation”. That is a fair description of a comfortable, moderating fabric, and a cloth that makes pockets of insulation in January does not stop making them in July. It is not a description of one that draws heat out of a hot sleeper.
Satin is a weave, and satin sheets are usually not silk
A satin sheet is not necessarily silk. Satin names the weave, not the fiber, and even a silk producer like Mulberry Park notes that many inexpensive satins are polyester or rayon. Polyester satin keeps the dense, smooth face of charmeuse and loses the one thing silk has going for it, which is that the fiber absorbs. It feels cold for a minute and clammy for an hour. Read the fiber line before the title; if it says polyester, it belongs with the materials we steer hot sleepers away from. Silk and night sweats
If you wake up damp, silk has two problems that have nothing to do with temperature. The first is what sweat does to it. The Council of Fashion Designers of America notes that perspiration can leave spots on silk, that silk loses a significant amount of its strength when wet, and that it has poor resistance to heat and sunlight. The second is washing. A sheet you sweat into needs frequent laundering, and silk is a demanding sheet to own: the same guide says many silks require dry cleaning, and Mulberry Park’s care advice for its silk sheets is a cold, delicate machine cycle or a hand wash with a silk-friendly detergent, then air drying or the lowest dryer heat, stored out of direct sunlight. That is a lot of ceremony for a sheet you may be washing twice a week.
Put that next to a lyocell or cotton set that goes in the machine and the dryer on low, and the case for silk on a sweaty bed mostly disappears. If you still want silk
It is a lovely thing to sleep on, and if your bedroom is cool enough that heat is a minor complaint, there is no reason not to. Buy it knowing what it is, and what it costs: on the day we checked, the silk sheet sets on Mulberry Park’s own store started at several times the price of the most expensive sheet set in our catalog. Look for a fiber line that says silk, not satin or silky. Look for a stated momme, so you know how much cloth you are buying. Read the care instructions and be honest about whether you will follow them. And treat it as a comfort purchase rather than a cooling one, because on the numbers that matter to a hot sleeper, it is not the best tool.

The best silky sheet for sweat is a 100% Tencel lyocell set, and it is the closest thing to silk’s hand that also does what a damp sleeper needs. Lyocell pulls moisture into the fiber, its listing describes the cloth as silk-like, and it goes in the machine on a gentle cycle and the dryer on low, with dry cleaning ruled out. It also states a 16-inch pocket. Like silk, it drapes flat against you and does not move much air, so it suits someone who sweats more than someone who is simply hot, and it wants gentle laundering. The coolest for the money is organic cotton percale, which is not silky and does not try to be. It is here because it is the opposite of charmeuse: a plain weave with open area for air, in a fiber that took up moisture faster than silk in the study above. It is the cheapest sheet set on this page. It is crisp, it wrinkles, and anyone who wanted silk will notice the difference on the first night. If you want airflow and do not care about feel, this is the sheet.
The closest to silk’s sheen is a lyocell set woven as sateen, and we are ranking it for what it is. If the look and drape of silk are what you want, this gets closest while keeping an absorbent fiber and a machine-washable care label. The weave is sateen, though, and sateen is the warmer weave, for the same float reasons that count against charmeuse, so expect it to sleep warmer than a percale. It is mid-priced.
The skip is a polyester satin pillowcase that sells itself as similar to silk, and its own bullets say 100% polyester. It genuinely reduces friction on hair, which is a real benefit for a different problem, and it is very cheap. For heat, it is the satin trap in miniature: smooth, cool for a minute, and unable to absorb anything.
